I began learning ASL out of general interest in linguistics, Sunflower sign Language shirt and decided I wanted to become fluent in it because it is a powerful language; then I decided I wanted to become an interpreter to give something back to the community that had been so kind to me. So there are two good reasons right there: ASL is a powerful language, and Deaf people are great. A bad reason is something like, you have decided you want to teach Deaf children, but you don’t already know ANY ASL, or any kind of signing at all, which means you don’t know any Deaf people, so how the hell could you know you want to teach Deaf children. Another bad reason is that you want to be an audiologist.
