In his third year Montana, San Francisco 49ers Queen classy sassy and a bit smart assy shirt helped by a revamped defense that went from nearly dead last to one of the best in the league, led the 49ers to a 13–3 record and their first Super Bowl victory over the equally resurgent Cincinnati Bengals and gained Super Bowl MVP with a workmanlike if unspectacular, performance. One of the biggest highlights of the year was the NFC Championship game against a very tough Dallas Cowboys, where Montana led one of his signature comebacks in the final minutes. Montana, but came back in the 1983 season all the way to the championship game against the powerhouse Redskins where, even though Montana led another comeback which tied the game in the final minutes, questionable pass intererence penalties allowed the Redskins to kick a game-winning field goal.
