Ahh – Issur Danielovitch (later changed to Demsky; Rip Kirk Douglas shirt then legally changed it to Kirk Douglas to join the US Navy). Others remember him for the movie “Spartacus”, but I haven’t seen it; my vague recollections of him are from Western movies & “Lust For Life” when he portrayed artist Vincent Van Gogh. Out of the Past is second because his gangster, Whit, is a supporting player to Robert Mitchum. Douglas was cool personified as the crime boss who would do anything to reclaim the woman who shot him (Jane Greer). Tied with The Big Sleep for most cigarettes consumed in a drama. Kirk Douglas describes his background in his autobiography, “The Ragman’s Son”. His birth name was Issur Danielovitch Demsky, the son of an illiterate immigrant Russian-Jewish ragpicker and junkman.
