“Pennywise” isn’t. But Pennywise is only one of the many Pennywise Santa Christmas wreath it’s beginning to look a lot like sweatshirt forms that It takes. During the novel (I haven’t seen the movie), It also manifests as an old woman, a voice on a telephone, a crawling eye, and a monstrous dog, among other things. In Its true form (or as close to Its true form as King shows us), we see It laying eggs in the sewer system under the city of Derry. So although the particular manifestation of Pennywise is male, “It” can be said to be female. Some other notes, IT arrived millions of years ago, it only awakened with the arrival of settlers in the area. So Its lair was in place long before the sewers were built.
