Queen Philippa of Hainault, who was the wife of Never underestimate a black queen with a nursing degree floral shirt Edward III and mother of the Black Prince (although there’s no suggestion he was named because of his skin colour) and John of Gaunt. The great grand-daughter of Philip III of France (in fact her other 3 great grandfathers were also kings, of Hungary, Naples, and Aragon) she was born in a lowland area (now part of Belgium) that had once been rules by the Moors and when a representative of Kind Edward II’s court was sent to give a report on the girl who had been ‘promised’ to his son, part of the description of her was ‘she is brown of skin all over’. Gentle, artistic and compassionate, and was well-loved by the English people and Queen’s College, Oxford was named for her.
