There’s a decently thorough history of torture devices, so Iron Maiden 45th Anniversary 1975-2020 signatures Irish St. Patrick’s Day shirt it seems odd that there wouldn’t be any record of this one if it had ever been used with any frequency. (Maybe it was real, but not popular at the time.) If anything, the maiden looks ill-suited to be a torture device, compared to others that we know of from medieval Europe. This isn’t because the maiden seems clearly lethal – few torture devices of the time were not – but because the maiden doesn’t appear designed to prolong and escalate suffering as much as possible. Once you’re locked into a maiden, that’s about as bad as it’s going to get.
