When I first got off the plane in Japan nearly 30 years ago, Autism Awareness Buffalo Bills it’s ok to be different shirt I was struck by how few wheelchairs I saw- practically none, and most locals treated someone in a wheelchair as a huge imposition on them, personally. “Barrier-free” and “universal access” weren’t even found in the lexicon in 1989 Japan. Good news: just today, I saw a poster on the city bulletin board, announcing that April 2 to 8 is officially National Autism Awareness Week in Japan. My two neighbor boys show signs of autism, and several of my closest teaching colleagues are the support teachers hired to help scaffold and integrate special needs students into the classroom experience. In fact, when I was playing on the men’s teachers’ basketball team, 6 of the other 14 members were special needs teachers. Change comes to this country. Glacially, but it comes.
