Roe Bartle, the current mayor of Kansas City. H. Roe Bartle’s nickname was “The Chief” and to pay homage to Bartle the team’s name changed from the Texans to the Chiefs. Although it’s not really well documented, I believe that the nickname “Chief” was given to Bartle as a response to him having been a volunteer firefighter for a while and being referred to as a “Fire Chief”, not as an American Indian Chief. However, there are also mentions about Bartle’s extensive Boy Scout leadership which often utilized American Indian nomenclature as well as some mentions of Bartle being given honorary membership to a local American Indian tribe.
