When New Orleans was granted an expansion team by the NFL 2019 New Orleans Saints Bowl Champions December 21 shirt to become the 16th team in that league, it happened on November 1, 1966. November 1 is All Saints’ Day in the Catholic church. As a nod to the day, and out of respect for the large Catholic community in New Orleans, team leadership asked the Archbishop Phillip Hannan of the Archdiocese of New Orleans for his input and opinion on the idea of naming the team “the Saints”, fearing that using the name might be viewed as sacrilegious. The Archbishop stated that he saw no problem with the use of the name, and it is reported that he loved the name.
